Leadership Role & Responsibility

 Leadership Roles and Responsibility

Leadership is a word we often hear but is widely misunderstood. This article specifically explains the meaning of leadership, the role of leaders, the 10 elements of excellent leaders, and the actions that leaders should take. You can always refer to this article when it comes to leadership.

What does leadership mean in the first place?

Leadership means the ability to lead an organization or the ability to influence a set of people to achieve collective goals. Leadership also means the ability to discover and put to use the available resources of an organization or individual.

So leadership can be personal and organizational (i.e. influencing people to become better and do better especially in the right way). The most amazing thing about leadership is that it begins from the personal level before the organizational level.

A leader at the organizational position is only as effective as his personal leadership development. And the principles which are involved in personal leadership are replicated in organizational leadership.

That is why leaders are not made or born, but it is discovered. This article focuses majorly more on organizational leadership.

Leadership on a more wide view means the ability to set goals and guide the organization or one’s self in the direction of the set goals. I think it will be easier to understand if you can imagine the captain who decides the destination of the ship and moves the ship in that direction.

What is the difference between leadership and management?

At first glance, these two have similar meanings, but there is a difference.

If you don't understand this difference, you may end up with management, even though you intended to demonstrate leadership.

In the first place, management is one of the methods to develop an organization by managing the resources and risks of the organization.

Leadership has the role of "offensive" to move the organization toward its goals. Management, on the other hand, has a "defensive" role in managing the organization.

The person in charge of leadership in an organization is called a "leader", while the person in charge of management in an organization is called a "manager".

Management focuses on the process leadership focuses on the people.

The management mindset

1.Create an environment where subordinates can entrust their work

2.Are the usual procedure of things being followed?

3. Are we following the set goals?

The Leadership mindset

1. Set new and better goals if the accustomed one is not working.

A leader is like a captain sailing the ocean. The ship cannot reach anywhere unless the captain sets a goal called the destination. So a big part of the role of a leader is to set goals for the organization. Conversely, if you don't set this goal, you can't lead your organization anywhere. Similarly, if goals and directions are not set, those under the leader will be confused as to "where and what should I do?" Therefore, setting goals is a very important factor.

2. Improve the environment of the organization.

Leaders create an environment where people will bring their best into their work and not just be devoted to the working environment.

3.Leaders work to improve the organization and not maintain the organization.

For example, it is difficult to successfully lead an organization to its goals without communication between members of the organization.

4. Set an example. The role of the leader is to set an example for the members.

If the organization has solid leaders, the members are often solid. On the other hand, if the leader has a habit of being lazy, the members may be lazy, saying, "Because the leader is lazy, I don't have to work with that passion. You are required to work in a way that serves as a sample.

5. Motivation

Encourage members to move independently. No matter how frantic the leader works to set an example, the results will be limited if the members are not motivated. Therefore, in leadership, it is necessary to encourage members to move independently.

Practices that will furnish your leadership skill

Goal setting ability.

As I mentioned above, leadership is required to set goals. You need to set goals that are feasible, not just goals.

Learning ability.

Learning ability is required because it is necessary to acquire various knowledge in order to demonstrate leadership.

Judgment skill.

Not surprisingly, leaders need to be able to make right decisions. Few people want to keep up with those who have an indecisive attitude.

Communication ability.

Leadership always involves someone other than you. Therefore, communication skills are required to move people other than you. Especially in order to make the members independent, it is necessary to improve the satisfaction and fulfillment of the members.

Training ability.

Leaders are required to have the ability to develop members. As I mentioned earlier, there are limits to what leaders can do alone, no matter how talented they are. Therefore, if you want to demonstrate leadership, you need the ability to develop members.

Honesty and Integrity

Naturally, only a sincere person can be a good leader. The reason is that a leader who breaks his promise will give the impression that "that person is dishonest only by his mouth" and will not listen to what the members say.

Taking responsibility.

Those who become leaders must also take responsibility for the members they lead. It is often said that middle management is difficult, but let's be aware that we will take responsibility for our members.

Business execution ability.

As mentioned above, the leader needs to be a role model for the members. Therefore, the leader must have excellent business execution ability. If you have a "boss who can't work" or a "boss who can work," it's clear which instruction you'd like to hear.

Motivation management ability.

Leadership needs to manage not only one's motivation but also the motivation of members. As long as you work as an organization, if the motivation of the members is low, the efficiency as a whole will decrease, and it is important to prevent it.

Tolerance.

The leader gives a direction, but some members say, "I think this is different." Therefore, you need to be tolerant enough to accept opinions that are different from your own.

Some actions that can help you in  your leadership

Define a task.

Set clear business goals with SMART in mind.

What is SMART?
Specific,
Measurable,
Achievable
Realistic,
Time Constrained

Make a plan.

Plan so that members don't bother to achieve their goals. It's not just about making plans, it's also about preparing alternatives in case of contingency.

Team activation.

Daily reports to team members on the degree of achievement of goals and the content of activities. Encourage communication and align team vectors to keep members motivated and revitalize the entire team.

Be more efficient.

Encourage members to achieve maximum effect with fewer resources. You should take measures to eliminate the waste of work of team members and at the same time improve quality. For example, streamlining the day-to-day operations of the entire team by implementing priority management and introducing tools.

Check the result.

Evaluates achievements and processes from the results of the team, and evaluate the role of the individual. It is also necessary to give guidance to the members based on the evaluation results. We propose the following goals and attempts to promote growth.

Motivate.

Evaluate the results correctly and find out how to improve performance. And maximize the potential of the members. To do this, first of all, you will be motivated and set realistic and challenging stretch goals for the members.

Stretch

Set goals that are slightly higher than your ability. Further growth can be expected by taking on the challenge.

Organize

Good leaders need to be able to systematize the team they lead, including the right organizational structure and processes. Clarify the roles of each member in the team and proceed with the organization.

Set an example.

Norms are required to be set not only for individuals but for the entire organization. Bad swatches are easy to see, but it takes time for good swatches to penetrate individuals and teams. You will need to be patient with the code until a good code of conduct permeates your team. Whether it takes time or not, not setting a principle will make the organization to rotten with the value and without discipline.
